What Indian Standards Require From Industrial Plugs and Socket Outlets
Indian Standards IS 1293 and IEC 60309 set safety requirements for plugs and socket outlets. IS 1293 covers household use up to 250 V and 16 A. IEC 60309 governs industrial grade plugs and sockets for up to 1000 V and 800 A. Both demand solid brass or copper contacts, proper earthing design, and correct IP ratings for the environment. BIS certification became mandatory for all products sold in India from December 2020.
